Two killed in separate crashes

Victims, both men, were from La Plata, Washington, D.C.

Two men were killed in separate single vehi- cle crashes on Friday and Saturday in Charles County.

The victim in Friday’s crash in Welcome has been identified as Rog- er Slaughter, 61, of La Plata, police reported. Derrick McCall, 26, of Washington, D.C., died in an Indian Head crash Saturday morning.

Around 2:15 p.m. on Friday, Charles County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the crash site in the 8200 block of Blossom Point Road and found Slaughter critically injured, an agency spokespers­on said. He

died shortly after on the scene.

Police have determined Slaughter had been traveling north when, for unknown reasons, his pickup truck left the road and struck a tree.

The sheriff’s office traffic operations unit is continuing the investigat­ion.

Around 7:22 a.m. on Saturday, Maryland State Police troopers responded to a crash site at the area of Chicamuxen Road and Riverside Road, and found that McCall had veered off the right side of the road and struck a tree, a news release states. The man was extricated from the vehicle, a Ford F-150, and treated by paramedics before he was pronounced dead on the scene. Police believe the accident was caused by driver error.

Charles County has seen nine traffic fatalities so far in 2017.

This investigat­ion is being continued by Sgt. C.M. Bowling, a collision reconstruc­tion specialist.
