CSM presents annual Jazz Festival this weekend

-

The College of Southern Maryland’s 14th annual Jazz Festival, March 31-April 1, will give area public school jazz bands a chance to sharpen their skills — and area music lovers a chance to tap their toes.

Jazz band students from area high schools will attend clinics all day beginning at 9 a.m., March 31, at the La Plata Campus, Fine Arts (FA) Building. World-renowned jazz saxophonist, composer/arranger Phil Burlin will rehearse with each band and critique their performances as part of Friday’s clinic.

The public is invited to attend this free event.

The festival continues with a jazz concert at 8 p.m. with The Phil Burlin Quartet.

At 8 p.m., April 1, the festival concludes with performances by the North Point High School Jazz Band and CSM’s Solid Brass Big Band Jazz Ensemble with Burlin as the guest artist.

Burlin attended St. Mary’s College of Maryland and North Texas State University. He directed the saxophone and clarinet quartets and taught jazz improvisation and saxophone at McDaniel College (formerly Western Maryland College) in Westminster. He opened for Miles Davis at the Eubie Blake Jazz Festival with the Gary Thomas Quintet and was a featured soloist with Electra recording artist Danny Gatton from 1987 to 1989. In 1988, Burlin’s quintet, The Shape of Things, recorded a CD of all Burlin originals titled “Urban Undertow.”

Burlin has served as first tenor saxophone in the U.S. Navy Band Commodores for the past 25 years and has performed with jazz artists such as Chris Potter, Jerry Bergonzi, Bob Mintzer, Stanley Turrentine, Seamus Blake and Branford Marsalis.

Proposed Hughesville Village zoning hearing set for April 10

The Charles County Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on the proposed new zoning for Hughesville Village at 6 p.m. Monday, April 10, in the Charles County Government Building, 200 Baltimore St., La Plata.

The purpose of the proposed zoning is to promote a traditional, walkable pattern of development in the village, as envisioned by the Hughesville Village Revitalization Plan adopted by the Charles County Board of Commissioners in 2007.

The new zoning will promote the transformation of Old Leonardtown Road into a pedestrian-friendly “Main Street”; help promote redevelopment of existing properties; allow for supporting residential uses; and promote employment for the village and surrounding area by maintaining existing industrial land for this purpose. The proposed zoning would also encourage village character by providing pedestrian-friendly storefront design and amenities; providing sidewalks; requiring ample landscaping along the frontage of properties; and generally ensuring that the scale of development is compatible with the existing development in the village.

The new zoning is intended to encourage new development while at the same time preserve the existing village scale and character. The proposed Hughesville Village Zoning District consists of four sub-zones: Core, Gateway, Residential, and Employment.

More information on the proposed zoning and proposed map can be found on the county website at www. CharlesCountyMD. gov/pgm/planning/ hughesville-village-revitalization-plan-and-implementation.

Citizens wishing to make oral or written comments are encouraged to attend the public hearing.
