Gladys A. Buckler

Gladys Adelaide “Nonnie” Buckler, 90, of La Plata, MD, passed peacefully at The Charleston in Waldorf, MD, on June 6, 2017.

Born on Dec. 16, 1926 in Bel Alton, MD, to the late Thomas A. Garner and the late Rosebelle A. Inscoe Garner. Gladys is one of 18 children and is preceded in death by her brothers: Bernard, Russell, Wilson, Thomas Jr., Raymond and George; sisters: Naomi, Georgetta, Ruth, Marian, Lillian and Barbara.

Gladys is sur vived and beloved mother to Jacqueline Holson (Joe Jr.), Jean Carol Downey, Patti Windsor (Bart), Beloved grandmother to grandchildren: Crystal McMullen (Rob), Staci Taglisferi (Joseph), Megan Sansbury, Patrick Downey, Matthew Downey (April), Jordan Windsor and Reed Windsor. Beloved great grandmother to great grandchildren: Ryan McMullen, C.J. Hoover, husband Ray Hoover, Riley McMullen, Rowdy McMullen, Broderick Draheim, Cole Sansbury and Hunter Sansbury.

Gladys and her 17 siblings grew up on a farm in Bel Alton. She lived with her family in Rich Hill in 1916 for a few years and again in 1944 to 1954. Most historians believe the Rich Hill house was lived in by Colonel Samuel Cox, and that John Wilkes Booth hid in the attic after shooting President Lincoln.

Shortly after graduating from the Sacred Heart High School, Gladys moved to Washington, D.C. where she worked for Blue Cross/Blue Shield for 30 years. She married the late James Louis Buckler and moved to Oxon Hill before settling in La Plata seven years ago and relished life at The Maples.

Gladys loved her daughters, grandchildren and family, enjoyed helping people, gardening and reading. Gladys was a devout Catholic, a very generous person and was always helping someone. She will be greatly missed.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 14, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Huntt’s Funeral Home, 3035 Old Washington Road, Waldorf, MD 20601. Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, June 15, 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 4590 St. Josephs Way, Pomfret, MD 20675.
