McDonough graduate Butler starred in two spring sports
Growing up in Port Tobacco, Brant Butler was always involved in multiple sports.
Having played football since he was 5 years old, Butler never had to think about what he favorite sport was.
He ate, drank and lived the sport.
Once he got to middle school, Butler’s athletic passions became more diversified as he began throwing himself into other sports.
In his first three years at McDonough High School, Butler was a wellknown versatile athlete. He took up football in the fall ran on the indoor track and field in the winter and played baseball in the spring.
That wasn’t enough as Butler decided to add another spring sport to his repertoire for his senior year: outdoor track and field.
Butler, who graduated with his McDonough senior class on June 3, said that it was an adjustment doing two spring sports.
“This was my only year doing two spring sports and it was a lot of work going to track and baseball practice in the same day at times,” said Butler, who will be attending NCAA Division III Shenandoah University (Va.) to play football in the fall. “Every other day we had baseball games and between those we had track meets, so my schedule was pretty hectic. It was just something else I could do and I liked to run and stuff. Playing two sports in the spring also helped keep me in shape for the next level.”
Doing two sports in the same season can be tough. Excelling at both is a whole different story, but Butler did just that.
Butler, who was a quarterback and wide receiver on the football team, helped lead the baseball team — which finished 16-4 overall — to a Southern Maryland Athletic Conference Potomac Division crown, a SMAC championship and a berth in Class 1A North Region championship game.
Under head baseball coach Mike Lydon, Butler played every position on the field except catcher and was the primary shortstop on the team.
Butler had the game of his career in the SMAC title game on May 9 as he pitched the last six innings of relief, keying the Rams to 5-4 victory in 13 innings over the Chopticon Braves at Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf.
