Charles County Children’s Aid Society receives book donation from ANS students

-

Charles County Children’s Aid Society, a nonprofit organization serving underprivileged children of Charles County, received a huge donation of new books from the students of Archbishop Neale School in La Plata.

“For the fifth consecutive year, we held a weeklong coin drive to raise money for new books to donate to children in need,” Traci Renner, ANS librarian, said in a release. “It’s done as a competition, grade versus grade. The competition was strong this year.”

With the promise of a pizza party for the grade that raised the most money, students were checking piggy banks and sofa cushions to raise the most money. The students raised a record $1,022, enabling them to provide CAS with 270 new books.

Principal Linda Bourne was impressed, but not surprised, by the results. “We put a great deal of emphasis on giving to others. Generosity is an important part of our Virtues in Practice program and the students are happy to participate.”

Out of the total raised, ANS kindergarteners contributed about $327, making them the pizza party winners. Third and first grade students came in second and third, respectively.

Rising third-grader Skyler Graham said she enjoyed taking part in the coin drive. Though her class did not win, she was delighted with the outcome.

“I feel happy giving to children who need help,” Graham said in the release. “I feel so sad when I see kids who don’t have a home or money to buy food or clothes. I am a kid, so I know giving a kid something they need will make their day better and their heart happy again.”

Pamela Vahle, chairwoman of the Children’s Aid Society, said the organization annually serves around 2,000 children, and it is far from a solo effort.

“We are very grateful to the students of Archbishop Neale School for raising money to help children that are less fortunate in our community,” Vahle said in the release. “These books will be given out at our Christmas Toy Connection Program in December. Giving back to helping children in our community is the best feeling anyone can have. We could not do this without you.”
