At a time of need, Weis Markets and its customers are donating $250,000 to the American Red Cross’s hurricane relief efforts, according to a press release.

“We are grateful to our customers for their generosity during a national crisis and know their donations will help the American Red Cross’s urgent relief work in Texas and Louisiana, and we’re extremely proud of our associates who enthusiastically supported the campaign, generating more than $223,000 in customer donations in seven days,” said Weis Markets’ chief operating officer Kurt Schertle, in the release.

Weis Markets’ associates raised the customer donations during the first week of their annual Fight Hunger campaign by giving customers the option to round up their orders or to purchase $1, $4 or $10 vouchers to be donated to American Red Cross’s Hurricane Harvey relief efforts in Texas and Louisiana. The $223,000 raised from generous customer donations will be complemented by a $27,000 corporate donation from Weis Markets to total $250,000, according to the release.

“Given the urgent need, we are designating our corporate donation to relief efforts in Texas, Louisiana, Florida and other parts of the south which were affected by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma,” Schertle said, in the release.

On Sept. 7, the Fight Hunger Campaign transitioned back to a local focus through Oct. 4, helping customers to support their local food banks through monetary and food donations. In addition to rounding up their orders and purchasing vouchers, customers can pay $4 to donate Weis Quality milk to local food banks, drop off non-perishable goods at the designated bins near the entrance of Weis Markets stores, and donate online at WeisMarkets.com/FightHunger, according to the release.

Currently in its tenth year, the Fight Hunger campaign raises awareness of food insecurity and provides food and donations to more than 150 local food banks and emergency food providers across seven states in Weis Markets’ 204-store service area, according to the release.
