North Point football wins, now 4-0
Score in every quarter, now 4-0
The North Point Eagles kept their perfect record intact with a 42-19 road victory over the Chopticon Braves on Friday night in a Southern Maryland Athletic Conference Potomac Division contest.
The Eagles (4-0 overall, 1-0 SMAC Potomac) led 14-7 after a quarter and 28-13 at halftime en route to the win.
“It went well. I thought the kids responded well tonight,” North Point head coach Tom Petre said. “Chopticon is a well-coached team, they’re a very physical team and very big up front. I’m proud of the way our guys played tonight and I felt like they played effectively and had a good night. A couple of our running backs had a good night.”
The Eagles were first to score as junior running back Corey Johnson sprinted 70 yards to score just four minutes into the game. Senior kicker Evan Patterson made the extra point and the Eagles led 7-0.
“I did good, I just felt all my adversity through the season and put it to the field,” Johnson said. “I just come on the field and give it my all
every play, I had some missed blocks but I did my best. I just ran hard and read my blocks, and got some help from my linemen. We got a lot more games to go this season, but its a big win for us.”
Chopticon (1-3, 0-1) answered back on junior running back Devon Townsend’s touchdown from a yard out. Senior kicker Dylan Edelen connected on the extra point and the game was tied at 7 with 4 minutes 31 seconds left to go in the first quarter.
“I couldn’t do without my O-line,” Townsend said. “They blocked very good. We just had mental mistakes, like turnovers and stuff that cost us the game. I just followed the O-line. I play this season, but it’s just in
spurts if I mess up my ankle or something. I will try to come back next year and be strong as the best player.”
With just seconds left before the quarter’s end, North Point junior quarterback Asa Williams ran the ball into the end zone for a 4-yard touchdown run on third down and goal. The kick was good and the Eagles led 14-7 after one quarter.
Williams was 9 of 15 passing for 159 yards with a touchdown and an interception
To start the second quarter, Johnson scored his second touchdown of the night and the visitors went up 21-7.
Just 20 seconds later, after the Eagles intercepted Chopticon junior quarterback Dominic Crampton’s pass, they scored again. Williams ran in from two yards out and North Point led 28-7.
Crampton took the ball into
his own hands and scored on a 1-yard touchdown run 14 seconds left before halftime. The deficit was trimmed to 28-13, which was the halftime score.
Towards the end of the third quarter, North Point answered with Williams finding senior wide receiver Deandre Beverly with a short pass in the end zone and it was 35-13.
In the fourth quarter, the Eagles scored once again with sophomore quarterback Tedros Gleaton running 15 yards into the end zone with 3:27 left to play. With Patterson’s sixth successful extra point of the night, the Eagles held a commanding lead of 4213.
Chopticon got on the board with 43 seconds remaining as Crampton connected with Jay Williams for a touchdown pass. The Braves went for the 2-point conversion, but Crampton’s
pass failed to find its target, leaving the score at the end of the game at 42-19.
“Again we make too many errors,” Chopticon head coach Anthony Lisanti said. “We had a really big turnover in the red zone. We come out in the third quarter, and we get a huge punt return that gets called back for a penalty. We give up the big play on the first offensive play. We have to execute and we got a lot of guys stepping in who haven’t played a lot. But they have to get it done in practice. Hats off to North Point, they’re a good team. We did put three touchdowns on the board but we have to play better defense.”
The Braves are at Leonardtown for a 6 p.m. kickoff on Friday. The Raiders (0-4) were blanked by Huntingtown in Week 4, 44-0.
“Devon Townsend was coming back from an injury and
I thought he did a good job,” Lisanti said. “There were a few guys out there who did a good job, but getting 11 on the field working together is the key and so far we haven’t achieved it. It’s just another chance to grow and get better.”
North Point will host Huntingtown at 7 p.m. Friday in a battle of 4-0 teams.
“Corey Johnson and Warren Whitaker had a couple of big runs. Asa Williams our quarterback had a good night,” Petre said. “We’re looking forward to this week, hopefully get a good week of prep and get another win in. Enjoy it tonight, forget it tomorrow and get into the next one. We have a young team and I’m proud of where they’re at right now. We told them all year, that they’re a team in transition and we have to take it one week at a time.”
