Officials say he tried to set his grandmother’s home on fire

Tyquan Freeman, 25, of no fixed address has been charged with resisting arrest, threat of arson and first-degree arson after he allegedly set fire to his grandmother’s Waldorf home last week.

According to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office, Freeman had been kicked out of his grandmother’s home and returned the evening of Wednesday, Sept. 19. Upon his return, he argued with his mother, who was moving belongings out of the home. During the argument, Freeman placed some of his clothing on the front yard and allegedly poured lighter fluid on his clothing and the steps leading into the home. Threatening to burn the house down, Freeman allegedly ignited the fire and fled the scene on foot.

A neighbor witnessed the incident and called 911.

Freeman’s grandmother then went back inside the home to await the arrival of authorities. The grandmother told CCSO Dep. Weaver she could smell the odor of lighter fluid inside her home. While inspecting her home, she saw lighter fluid covering the comforter of one of the beds on the second floor. She was unable to locate other areas in the home where the lighter fluid may have been spread due to its

overpowering smell.

As Weaver spoke with the grandmother, Freeman reportedly returned to the Waldorf residence and attempted to push his way into the house. Weaver attempted to arrest him but Freeman allegedly resisted and refused orders to place his hands behind his back, instead taking a fighter’s stance, according to court documents. Freeman’s grandmother urged him to cooperate, but Freeman allegedly persisted in challenging the officer.

Weaver managed to restrain Freeman until other units were able to arrive. Freeman is currently being held at the Charles County Detention Center without bond.
