Your kids are likely ready to get out there and celebrate Halloween. After last year, this Halloween will be a welcome celebration full of candy and costumes. However, the holiday involves buying some supplies, whether it’s candy, decorations or costumes. Halloween

shopping, while fun, can be costly.

Consumer spending on Halloween-related items is expected to reach an all-time high of $10.14 billion this year, up from $8.05 billion in 2020, according to the National Retail Federation. On average consumers plan to spend $102.74 on Halloween-related items — $10 more than they planned to spend last year. The number of Americans planning to decorate for Halloween is on par with last year’s spike in interest, with spending on decorations continuing to climb to $3.17 billion, up from last year’s $2.59 billion. Total spending on costumes is the highest it has been since 2017 at $3.32 billion. It’s important to spend wisely this Halloween so you are getting the most for your budget.

Better Business Bureau offers these tips to consider when Halloween shopping:

■ Set a budget. Do your best to stick to it.

■ Buy from stores that have been around. You want one that has a clear track record and good reviews. Stores with a short or spotty history may change their name yearly to stay in business.

■ Be wary shopping at seasonal stores. Ask how long they plan to stay open after Halloween. If they plan to close up shop Nov. 1 or refuse returns after the holiday, consider shopping elsewhere.

■ Don’t get your heart set on one costume before you shop. The more flexibility you have with your choice, the easier it will be to find one that fits your budget.

■ Try on costumes before you buy and check packages for all of the included materials before leaving the store.

■ Shop late or early for costumes. Buying the day before Halloween can save you money as stores are trying to get rid of inventory. Likewise, if you know what you want to be for Halloween next year, buy it the day after Halloween.

■ Consider shopping at consignment stores and thrift stores.

■ Re-use and re-imagine costumes by doing a costume swap with friends or family or using hand-me-downs.

■ Consider renting your costume. Be sure you understand your responsibilities and everything is spelled out in the rental agreement.
