Warranty vs. service contract

- Heloise Household Hints

Dear Readers: When you decide to make a major appliance or household purchase, it’s key that you understand the difference between a warranty and a service contract, and make certain that you are getting the right service agreement.

1. Warranty: This comes with the product you are buying, and it will be part of the price. Most importantly, coverage will be spelled out.

2. Service contract: This is a separate agreement that will provide maintenance services for a specified time period and for a fee. — Heloise

Making fruits and veggies last longer

Dear Readers: When you bring home fruits or vegetables from the supermarket, it’s important to store them properly in the refrigerator so they last longer. It’s a good idea to try to eat them within a couple of days after you get them. But if you can’t, here’s how you can keep them as fresh as possible.

Store veggies in the refrigerator in perforated plastic bags. Use the crisper drawer to keep the veggies fresh. In new refrigerators, you can adjust the humidity controls in the them.

Keep fruits and vegetable in separate drawers. This will stop the ethylene gas of fruits from affecting the veggies. And take note: Onions, garlic, potatoes and tomatoes should not be kept in the refrigerator. — Heloise

Removing sap from clothing

Dear Heloise: If you are outdoors, you can come in contact with tree sap. If it gets on your clothes, here’s how to remove it. When you get home, take off your garments right away. Then read the care labels. For washable clothing, take these steps.

Get a stain remover that contains dry-cleaning solvent. First, test the fabric for colorfastness. Then place the sap-stained area face down on a clean cloth or paper towels. Carefully squirt the solvent on the back side of the stain and press with another cloth or paper towel to push the solvent through. Allow to air-dry. — Heloise

Inside of your car stinky?

Dear Readers: First, get rid of all the sources of the smell — soda bottles, trash, leftover food containers, gym bag, smelly shoes or anything else that shouldn’t be left in your auto. Vacuum the upholstery and the floor to remove dirt and debris. Also, put a couple of fabric-softener sheets underneath the seats. Wash smelly rubber mats with soap and water. Rinse them well and let dry before putting them back inside. — Heloise
