Miamisburg TE hoping to turn heads at OSU camp

- By Marcus Hartman Staff Writer

Recruiting never stops, but it does speed up and slow down.

Today represents another acceleration point with the start of college camp season across the country.

Camps provide chances for prospects already on the radar to get more exposure and for lesser-known players to get noticed.

With more than a dozen offers, Miamisburg tight end Jackson Mcgohan has been noticed, but how high can his stock go?

Although the rising senior committed to Cincinnati in January, other schools have not stopped recruiting him.

Oklahoma, Iowa and Miami (Fla.) offered Mcgohan scholarships in May, and Vikings coach Lance Schneider confirmed Mcgohan will be at Ohio State today for the Buckeyes’ first camp of the year.

Ohio State has a verbal commitment from Tennessee prep tight end Ty Lockwood, but Lettermanrow.com reports the Buckeyes figure to take another from a group that includes Mcgohan, Riley Williams of Oregon, Walker Lyons of California, Olsen Henry of Florida and Vance Bolyard of North Carolina.

Mcgohan was fifth in the GWOC last season with 699 receiving yards, including a season-high 152 yards in an upset of state runner-up Springfield in October.

Listed at 6-4, 211 on last year’s roster, he continues to bulk up and appears to fit the mold of an Ohio State tight end recruit as a rangy pass-catcher with room to grow.

“That’s exactly what I’m trying to show them,” he told this news organization Tuesday.

Here are some other notes from around the region:

■ Lakota West cornerback Joshua Fussell committed to Northwestern. He is the

28th-ranked player in the state and the No. 72 CB in the country. He’s the second member of the Firebirds’ secondary to commit to a Big Ten school from the class of 2023, joining Ohio State’s Malik Hartford. Northwestern also has a commitment from Northmont defensive back/linebacker Nigel Glover.

■ Springfield receiver Anthony Brown remains the top-rated uncommitted player in the state. Ohio’s No. 5 prospect per 247Sports Composite rankings is also still adding offers. He reported one from Oklahoma this weekend.

■ Northmont receiver Javien Brownlee announced he plans to attend camps at Indiana, Wake Forest, Kent State and West Virginia. He is committed to Kent State.

■ Piqua linebacker Sam Schmiesing announced he picked up an offer from Northern Colorado to go with one from Navy, among others.

■ Morehead State offered Miamisburg defensive back Desmond Owens and Centerville linebacker Matthew Karpinsky while Springboro offensive lineman Matthew

Appel got an offer from Bucknell.

■ Centerville coach Brent Ullery said Karpinsky is among a handful of Elk seniors who will be hitting the camp circuit this summer along with DB Emmanuel Deng, kicker Jackson Courville, running back Emable Wakilongo, receiver Sean Cole and offensive linemen

James Owsley and Jackson Mires. Wakilongo has committed to Bowling Green, and senior linebacker Joseph Jean-louis already can boast of multiple MAC offers along with Connecticut and Massachusetts.

■ A junior-to-be at Centerville is also among those to watch this summer: Reggie Powers. The 2024 defensive back, who announced he will camp at Ohio State on June 15, has multiple FBS offers already, including Cincinnati.

■ Already many freshmen and sophomores are also getting some attention, including Bellefontaine quarterback Tavien St. Clair. The Class of ’25 prospect announced he will camp at Tennessee, Toledo, Pitt and Ohio State.
