Minnesotans cast their ballots earlier this month in the presidential primary. Fast forward, the major party candidates have been all but chosen. President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are on the path for winning their nominations. So, now what?

Before we get to the general election, there’s a number of steps, and yes, more races, to get through.

Minnesota’s party nominations for state-wide elections are later this summer, and so are the conventions where national parties officially elect their candidates.

Here’s what you need to know about what’s coming next.

State primaries

Earlier this month, Minnesota’s presidential primary and dozens of other states awarded delegates to candidates that received a certain number of votes, swiftly sending Biden and Trump down clear paths of winning their party’s nominations.

Now, it’s the state candidates turn to vie for party primary wins.

Candidates running for state and local offices will run in the state primary on Aug. 13.

State party conventions

Both the Minnesota GOP and DFL will hold state party conventions where they will endorse candidates and select delegates to be sent to the national conventions later in the summer.

The state GOP convention will be held on May 17 and 18 in St. Paul. The DFL convention is May 31 to June 2 in Duluth.

National party convention

Delegates selected by their states will vote at their respective convention for presidential nominees.

The Republican National Convention will take place on July 15 to July 18 in Milwaukee.

The Democratic National Convention will be held in Chicago on Aug. 19 to Aug. 22.

When’s the next election?

The state primaries are Aug. 13. and early voting starts June 28.

The general election is Nov. 5. with early voting available Sept. 20.
