Founder of Jersey Mike’s drops by Greenwich store
Scene… Jersey Mike’s Subs founder and CEO Peter Cancro stopped by the sandwich shop’s location in Riverside last Sunday. Cancro was there to say hello and thank the employees for their hard work during the COVID-19 pandemic and for their dedication to giving to the community. In November, Jersey Mike’s raised over $2.5 million nationwide for Feeding America, a nonprofit network of food banks.
Out there… Actor, director, producer and Americares board member Tony Goldwyn, a New Canaan resident, will host an Americares virtual volunteer event to commemorate the Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service. “#Heroes4Health Unite: Be an Americares COVID-19 Hero” takes place at 1 p.m. Monday via Zoom. Americares Chief Medical Officer Dr. Julie Varughese will join Goldwyn during the 30-minute online event to energize and encourage volunteers to virtually influence friends and family to spread positive messaging about mask-wearing, physical distancing and hand-washing. Volunteers will receive a digital tool kit with messages that can be shared via social media and messaging apps. To date, Americares, a nonprofit disaster relief and global health organization, has provided 315 tons of critically needed supplies, including masks, gowns and disinfectants, to combat the spread of the coronavirus. It has also trained thousands of health care workers in infection prevention and control, disaster preparedness, and mental health and psycho-social support. Americares is also caring for patients at its primary care clinics in Colombia, Connecticut, El Salvador and India, and providing surge medical personnel in Peru to support health facilities overwhelmed by the pandemic. Out there… The Greenwich Library is holding a Zoom conversation with world-renowned presidential historian and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Doris Kearns Goodwin at 7 p.m. Jan. 28, followed by an audience Q&A from 8 to 8:30 p.m. Noted New York Times journalist and author Sarah Lyall will join Goodwin in a conversation about the themes in Goodwin’s book, “Leadership in Turbulent Times,” including the 2020 presidential election, inauguration and the impact of the U.S. on world affairs. Out there… The ninth annual Greenwich Snow Sculpture Contest sponsored by Greenwich Recreation and the Greenwich Arts Council will be open throughout the winter season. Contestants can create their best snow sculptures and submit a photo for an opportunity to win a prize from Greenwich Parks and Recreation. Photo submissions must be sent via email to ptroiano@greenwichct.org and include: title and picture of sculpture, full name(s) of sculptor(s), and home address. The deadline to submit photos is Friday, March 5. The contest is open to Greenwich residents only. The town reserves the right to use the photos in town media.
Out there… The YWCA Greenwich and over 30 community partners will celebrate the life of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. by hosting a panel of experts for a Zoom discussion on “Overcoming Racial Health Disparities:
During and Beyond COVID-19” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21. The discussion will be moderated by Tiffany Donelson, president and CEO of Connecticut Health Foundation, with panelists Dr. Irene Blanco, associate dean in the Office of Diversity Enhancement at Albert Einstein College of Medicine; Dr. Juliet Mushi, OB/GYN and expert in maternal/fetal health at Yale School of Medicine; and Dr. Sten Vermund, dean and professor of public health and professor of pediatrics at Yale School of Medicine.
