CT estate once owned by a former U.S. secretary of state listed for under $2M

The home on 990 Silvermine Road in New Canaan has a similar colonial facade to countless others in Connecticut. But its traditional exterior is secondary to the notable former resident that used to live inside.

According to town of New Canaan property records, the 990 Silvermine Road home was previously owned by Lawrence

Eagleburger, who was the U.S. Secretary of State under President George H.W. Bush. Eagleburger assumed the position of Acting Secretary of State in August 1992 after James Baker vacated the seat, according to the United States Department of State. Bush gave Eagleburger a recess appointment of Secretary of State on Dec. 8, 1992. Previously an ambassador to Yugoslavia, the U.S. Department of State noted that Eagleburger was Bush’s “primary advisor during Yugoslavia’s disintegration following communism’s demise in Eastern Europe.” Eagleburger left the role of Secretary of State just over a month later in January 1993.

The former secretary of state owned the New Canaan home from 1984 to 1989, during which he served as a career ambassador in the state department. While Eagleburger purchased the home for $355,000 nearly 40 years ago, it is currently on the market for $1.925 million. The five-bedroom, fivebathroom home has 5,215 square feet of living space, which comes courtesy of several upgrades done to the property over the years.

According to information provided by co-listing agents Christine Williams and Sarah Arestia, pieces of the home date back as far as the 1800s. The living room — which features exposed beams, 14foot ceilings and a fireplace — was previously a barn from the 1800s, and in 1925, it was rebuilt as a home. Eagleburger added an addition in 1988, the listing agents noted, which included a guest suite with kitchenette, bonus room and second primary suite.

There are four fireplaces throughout the home, as well as a formal dining room and a second great room, which is located next to one of the bedroom suites. On the home’s nearly 2 acres of land, there is a three-car garage and a heated pool.

New Canaan is one of many towns and cities in Connecticut to have seen its average home values increase in the past two years. Between January 2020 and January 2022, home values in New Canaan jumped $358,189, marking an increase of 29.56 percent. Real estate website Redfin recorded a median sale price of $1,400,464 in New Canaan for February 2022, which decreased by 0.68 percent since 2021. The number of homes sold in New Canaan also decreased year over year from 119 in 2021 to 68 in February 2022.
