Arthur T. Ratzel
Arthur T. Ratzel, 98 of Stamford, CT, beloved husband of 71 years to Hilde K. Ratzel (Groh) died February 5, 2022 at his home. He was born November 30, 1923 in Germany to Albert and Berta Ratzel.
He was predeceased by three brothers and one nephew in Germany and niece Regina Groh Reith of Switzerland. Arthur is survived by his wife Hilde, niece Lorraine Lindsay of Darien, one brother, and many nieces and nephews in Germany and Switzerland, and cousins-in-law and many dear and longtime friends.
After school graduation, he learned the trade of painting and decorating, followed by attending the Art Academy in Germany and School of Visual Arts in New York City. Arthur was a member of various art societies and participated in many exhibitions. In 1965 he started his own painting business and retired in 1984 to dedicate more time to his art work.
He was an active member of several societies, life member of the Norwalk Quartette Club, member of the Sons of Italy, in Norwalk, Elks and The Eagles clubs in Stamford. Arthur joined the Turner Liedertafel in 1951 and was a board member and president for many years and was awarded The Bundesverdienst Kreuz of the Republic of Germany in 1978 by General Council
Dr. Ungerer for his efforts of promoting German culture in America.
Arthur's favorite pastime was reading about American world history and trying to learn different languages. His motto was knowledge is always an asset. The family and friends will sadly but lovingly remember Arthur's interesting lectures.
A funeral service was held at the Bosak Funeral Home on February 10th. It was officiated by Pastor Breznen of Trinity Lutheran Church and was attended by family and many dear friends. His burial followed at Fairfield Memorial Park.
