Ruth Elinor Schmidt, 96, a longtime Stamford resident, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2022 with her family by her side. Ruth was born in Chicago, IL on May 1, 1926, to the late Ruth and Frank Taylor.

Ruth graduated from Flushing High School in 1943 and became a Licensed Practical Nurse after attending Wright Tech from 1967 to 1968. She worked for Pan American Airways, St. Joseph Hospital and was a private duty nurse for many years. Ruth was married to Lawrence A. Schmidt in 1946 and they shared 73 beautiful years of marriage, before his passing in 2019.

Ruth was actively involved in service to her community, volunteeri­ng for the Red Cross during World War II, serving as PTA president at St. Cecilia’s Elementary School and as a lector and Eucharisti­c Minister at St. Cecilia’s Church. Religion was an important part of Ruth’s life. She was a devout member of the Catholic Church, a daily communican­t and she lived her faith every day.

Ruth is survived by 6 children: Karen Lamontagne (Don), Gerrie Lambo, Kenneth Schmidt, Mary Gibson (Kevin), Ellen Lang (Charlie) and Barbara Ryan (Mike). She is also survived by 32 grandchild­ren, 51 greatgrand­children and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and her husband, Ruth was predecease­d by her brother Elmer Taylor, daughter Kathleen Ruszkowski, son Lawrence F. Schmidt, son-in-law Pete Lambo, and great-grandson Aiden Lambo.

Ruth was kind and caring and the true matriarch. She was immensely proud of her family and never missed a game or an event that her children participat­ed in. The house on Hope Street was the hub of the family and the location of countless barbecues, birthday parties and holiday celebratio­ns. Her friends always looked forward to getting her Christmas cards so they could see how much her family had grown. She was a fan of the New York Yankees, a dedicated follower of the UConn women’s basketball team and an avid bridge player.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Bridget of Ireland, Church, 278 Strawberry Hill Avenue, Stamford, CT 06902.

Family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday, January 3rd, from 4 pm to 8 pm at Bosak Funeral Home, 543 Shippan Avenue in Stamford, CT. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday, January 4th at 10 am at St. Bridget of Ireland Church, 278 Strawberry Hill Avenue in Stamford, CT. Her interment will follow at St. John R.C. Cemetery, in Darien, CT.
