Former UConn star Walker tests positive for coronavirus
Megan Walker, the former UConn star and New York Liberty rookie, has tested positive for the coronavirus.
“She is in self-isolation under the care of team physicians, did not travel with the team to IMG Academy, and is unable to join the team for the start of training camp,” the Liberty announced in a statement Friday evening.
Walker, the ninth overall selection in April’s draft, tested positive prior to traveling to Bradenton, Fla., where the WNBA will hold an abbreviated 22-game season amid the pandemic. The team said Walker’s asymptomatic, but did not specifically indicate when she will return.
“The Liberty are in frequent communication with Megan and are optimistic that she will eventually join the team at IMG Academy and compete in the 2020 WNBA season when it is safe for her to do so,” the statement read.
“The safety and health of our players and staff is of the highest priority to the organization and the team is doing everything within its power to ensure that Megan receives the best care possible.
Walker, a 6-foot-1 forward, bypassed her senior season at UConn after averaging a team-high 19.7 points and 8.4 rebounds.
She was named an AllAmerican by the Associated Press, U.S. Basketball Writers Association and Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.
