‘We are asking as a family for them to step up’

Brother of woman killed in shooting pleads with witnesses to speak

- By John Nickerson

STAMFORD — The brother of the Stamford mother killed by gunfire that wounded two others in an East Side parking lot early Sunday morning joined police Monday in calling for witnesses to come forward to tell authorities what they know about the incident.

Police on Monday identified the deceased woman as Shernetta Dunmore, 35, a mother of a teenage son and an innocent bystander to the shooting.

Her brother, Jamal Dunmore, 43, said Monday his hometown of Stamford is a special place with a lot of

special people who will do what is right when it comes to helping to find his sister’s killer.

“The city has a confident mentality and if Stamford is the stand-up town as we believe, we are asking as a family for them to step up,” he said. “I’m believing the community will stand up for our family and I believe the individuals will be brought to justice.

“I pray their hearts will be softened, and I know this is faithful thinking, but I think people will step up and turn in those individuals who are responsible.”

Stamford Police Capt. Richard Conklin amplified Dunmore’s appeal for witnesses, saying that Shernetta Dunmore could have been anyone’s mother or sister who was shot and killed for no reason.

“We are starting to identify a lot of people who where there and we have some decent video and we would like people to come forward,” Conklin said. “We have to implore them because an innocent mother lost her life during this situation. We really want to seek justice for her and her family and the community.”

Two Stamford men, ages 43 and 27, were also struck by bullets in the shooting. One of those men turned up at Bridgeport Hospital and the other at Stamford Hospital.

Police initially reported that a fourth person, another woman, had been struck by gunfire in the parking lot as well, but they have since determined that the woman had nothing to do with the Stamford shooting, and was probably struck by a bullet further upstate, possible Hartford, Conklin said.

Conklin said he did not want to put a number on the amount of guns going off in the parking lot Sunday, but he said about 30 shots were fired.

“It is really troubling, the amount of shots that were taken, probably in the neighborhood of about 30, and numerous guns were pressed into use in this situation. It is really troubling,” he said.

Conklin said there were dozens of people in the parking lot at the time the shooting began. As well as the video, he said investigators are still canvassing the area looking for more witnesses, and people are beginning to talk about what they saw.

Conklin asked that anyone with information please call investigators working the case at 203 977-4417.
