Clarifying COVID data at CLC
In an article published Nov. 27 titled, “Like schools and offices, child care centers across CT seeing a rise in COVID cases,” a possibly unduly worrisome picture of some child care centers was painted. I was quoted as acknowledging an increase in COVID cases among our children in the last several weeks. That is true.
However, what was omitted and is critical to fully understand the likely risks involved is that, in the 29 weeks that CLC (Children’s Learning Centers of Fairfield County) has been open and serving the community, there has been no secondary transmission of the disease. No other children in our program (currently about 535 onsite across seven sites) have contracted the disease from a classmate. And equally important, none of our staff have gotten sick either
We attribute this sterling record to, among other things, the strict risk mitigation protocols that are in place which go beyond any CDC guidelines. The point is that, for now, we are a safe place for both children and teachers.
We want the community to know that it is healthy for children to come to school, rather than being in lockdown at home. It is also healthy for their parents to be able to work without the impossible task of caring for their children simultaneously.
This could all change suddenly and we will respond quickly and responsibly. In the meantime, families and our staff rely on us every day to keep them safe and we are committed to continuing to do just that.
