Stamford-based racial justice group holds holiday toy drive
STAMFORD — The activist group Justice for Brunch focuses typically on racial justice issues in lower Fairfield County. They’re perhaps best known for planning marches for where and when affluent citizenry are enjoying leisure activities — such as brunch — to jolt them out of complacency.
Now, the Stamfordbased collective is focused on creating a little holiday magic for children throughout the region. The group is holding a toy drive in the hope of making sure the season feels special for everyone after a difficult year.
“We know that times are hard right now,” said Annie Love, social media director for the group. “So, we wanted to give back to the communities that have helped us.”
Justice for Brunch has partnered with other local groups, including Greenwich Youth for Justice and the Stamford NAACP’s Young Adults Committee to provide school children in Stamford and Bridgeport with new toys as 2020 rolls to a close.
The group’s first official holiday toy drive also comes with some pandemic-friendly restrictions, as most things do during the pandemic. Justice for
Brunch is only accepting donations through the mobile payment service Cash App to keep the process COVID-safe.
For those hoping to make a more targeted choice, the organization plans to release an Amazon wish list in the coming days. There, people can pick out, purchase and send toys directly to children in need while ensuring that kids get exactly what they want under the tree this year.
“We’re honestly looking to make happiness for anyone who needs it because everyone deserves that holiday cheer,” said Love.
