1900 Colonial in western New Canaan has modern amenities and lots of light

- By Robert Storace

Built in 1900 and updated to perfection with all modern amenities in recent years, this wondrous colonial on New Canaan’s Weed Street has all the character and charm any homeowner can ask for. “The best feature of this house is how it was laid out. It’s got great quality and is bright with an abundance of windows,” said listing agent Antoinette Lanni-Lampert of Brown, Harris, Stevens. “It has an open floor plan with character and charm and is also located next to the town’s Nature Center Trail.”

The crème beige colored home – which is sited on 2.21-acres and features five beds, four full baths and two half baths – has a walk-out basement for storage, a main level, and a second level. To the left of the foyer on the main level is a hallway that leads to an elegant living room with fireplace and French doors that go onto a deck. Adjacent to the living room, Lanni-Lampert said, is a paneled library. “The library is a classic with coffered ceilings and the library steps out into its own private deck,” she said. Immediately right of the foyer is the dining room with coffered ceilings, extensive millwork, and a fireplace. The dining room’s windows were restored and “are truly divine,” Lanni-Lampert said. This room, she said, leads into the large kitchen and has a separate entrance to the butler’s pantry.

The kitchen – which has a fireplace and eat-in area – has a Wolf range, Wolf double ovens, a Sub-Zero refrigerator, and two additional refrigerator drawers in the island. “It’s a spacious kitchen. It also has wide beadboard ceilings and an entrance that leads out to a nicely sized sycamore tree. That tree has an

old-fashioned rope swing,” Lanni-Lampert said. Next to the kitchen is the mudroom, which steps into the family room. The family room, Lanni-Lampert said, has an oversized fireplace, wide-plank floors, window seats, and French doors that lead out to the property.

The upper level has five bedrooms, including the primary suite. There is also an office, playroom, exercise room and laundry on this level. The primary bedroom has an antique fireplace, walk-in closet with dressing room, and “one of the coolest doors I’ve ever seen in my life. It’s solid and might even be from the original house as it has a lot of detail work and is period specific,” Lanni-Lampert said. The white bathroom has Carrara marble, a Jacuzzi tub and shower.

The four other bedrooms, Lanni-Lampert said, are “all nicely sized.” Two are en suite bathrooms, she noted, and the home also has a detached three-car garage. There is also a nice level and spacious yard with fire pit and lots of mature trees, and the home is professionally landscaped, she said. “It’s literally minutes from the village of New Canaan and minutes to the train,” she said.
