UConn’s Kuznetsov signs; Pecknold for Penrose

Yan Kuznetsov has left the UConn men’s hockey team after two years to sign with the Calgary Flames, the NHL team announced Tuesday. Kuznetsov, a 6foot-4, 215-pound defenseman who turned 19 earlier this month, played 50 games over two seasons with the Huskies and also represente­d his native Russia at the 2021 World Junior Championsh­ip. He was the Flames’ second-round pick in the 2020 NHL draft.

PECKNOLD FINALIST:

Quinnipiac’s Rand Pecknold is among the finalists for the Spencer Penrose Award as Division I coach of the year, the American Hockey Coaches Associatio­n announced. The finalists include coaches whose teams have reached the Frozen Four as well as each conference’s coach of the year; Pecknold was the ECAC’s choice. He won the award in 2016, when the Bobcats reached the national championsh­ip game for

the second time in four years.

ALLAIN TO WORLDS:

Yale coach Keith Allain will serve as an assistant coach for Team USA at the Under-18 World Championsh­ip, April 26-May 6, in Frisco, Texas. The head coach is former Yale and Sacred Heart assistant Dan Muse, and former Bridgeport Sound Tigers forward Greg Mauldin is also on the

coaching staff.

TAKING A FLYER: Sacred Heart forward Marcel Godbout signed with the Pensacola Ice Flyers of the Southern Profession­al Hockey League on Monday, according to the league transactio­ns. The Michigan native scored 20 points in 54 career games for the Pioneers, including 11 points in 18 games in his senior season.
