Austin named head of Yale GC

- By Joe Morelli

Jeffrey Austin has been named the golf course superintendent at The Course at Yale, the school announced in a release Tuesday afternoon.

Austin comes from Quail Hollow Country Club in Painesville, Ohio, where he was serving as the director of agronomy. Included in his more than 16 years in the business is a near fouryear setting as the assistant superintendent at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia, home to the Masters Tournament.

“To become the next steward of such a historically important course like the one at Yale is exactly what I have worked for throughout my career,” Austin said in the statement. “The lessons that I have learned will ensure that I provide the best available conditions on a daily basis to our golfers. I am looking forward to joining (general manager) Peter (Palacios) and the entire Bulldog family.”

Austin went from Augusta National GC to Quail Hollow in 2014. Among his other stops as first superintendent includes the Stonewater Golf Club in Highland Heights, Ohio, and the Garden City Golf Club in Garden City, New York.

“Jeff spent his formative years within our industry working as a core member of my team,” said W.B. Owen III, the director and golf course superintendent

at the Augusta National GC in the statement. “While here, he demonstrated agility in his ability to listen and learn, strengthen his understanding and application of agronomy practices and a passion for our sport and the cathedrals on which it is played. We are proud to call Jeff an Augusta National alumni and look forward to seeing him every year when he returns as our invited guest to assist us with our tournament.”

Austin replaces Scott Ramsay, who left in March of 2020 for the same position at CC of Farmington after 17 years.

Yale Golf Course spent much of 2020 closed due in part to the COVID-19 pandemic. The course reopened on Sept. 28.

Despite the course being closed for months, Yale remained the top collegiate course in the U.S. according to Golfweek.
