Eileen Hoyt

-

Eileen Hoyt, a beloved wife, mother and grandmother, and lifetime resident of Stamford, peacefully passed away at Cassena Care at Stamford on May 11th with her family at her side. She was born in Stamford on February 9, 1944 and was one of 5 children born to the late Bartley and Mary (Flanagan) Harrington.

Eileen grew up in an IrishAmerican family. Her father was employed with the railroad and her mother was the matriarch of the family. Growing up in a close-knit family, they always had large holiday dinners in her parent’s living room. That tradition continued with her own family, when she married Walter and had their three children. Together they would go to either her parents or his parents house for family dinners. As her parents got older, the family’s traditional dinners transferred to either Eileen’s living room or her sister Virginia’s dining room. The families grew larger with new marriages and children, and it wasn’t long before those room’s walls that held the tables and chairs were cracking at the seams.

Eileen and Walter have been inseparable since the day they met. As their children grew, and it was just the two of them they went shopping together, out to dinner, or to the movies. Mostly, they just liked staying home and sitting on the couch together while Eileen curled up, always with a book.

Eileen loved children and books, so for over 30 years she worked at Stark Elementary School media center as an aide assisting the librarian and helping children. The library was the perfect spot for Eileen to pass on her knowledge and love of books to the children in the school. Finally retiring in 2012, she was beloved by all she worked with and all the children at the school.

Eileen will never be forgotten by her husband Walter and her children Stacey, Sharon, and Michele. She’ll also be missed by her grandchildren Kevin, Justin, and Olivia, and her sister Virginia and brother Robert, and all her family and friends who know and loved her throughout her entire life.

Eileen is survived by her beloved husband of 56 years, Walter E. Hoyt; her son, Stacey Hoyt and his wife Dorene; daughters, Sharon Hoyt and Michele Furnaros and husband John; grandchildren, Kevin Furnaros, Justin Hoyt and Olivia Hoyt; sister, Virginia O’Neill; brother and sisterin-law, Robert and Sandy Harrington; her lifelong friend, Terry Gault Lloyd and many nieces, nephews and extended family.

In addition to her parents, Eileen was preceded in death by her sisters, Margaret Serafin and Catherine Madden, and her brother-inlaw, James O’Neill.

Family and friends may call at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford on the morning of Monday, May 17th from 9 a.m to 10:30 a.m., with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary R.C.
