Stamford firefighter remains hospitalized after weekend blaze
STAMFORD — A city firefighter is still in the hospital being treated for his injuries nearly a day and a half after he was hurt while fighting a fire at an unoccupied home, fire officials said.
Stamford Fire Chief Trevor Roach said the firefighter was still undergoing tests at the hospital as of noon Monday for potential injuries to his legs and shoulder.
The firefighter, a 47-year-old veteran of the department, was injured Saturday night when he fell through the floor while battling a fire at a home in the area of Reynolds Avenue and Austin Avenue, Roach said.
Despite the extended stay at the hospital, Roach said the injuries were “nothing major.”
The fire was first reported around 9:50 p.m. Saturday night.
The first crews arrived within four minutes, officials said, and found a fire involving the deck that was quickly spreading up the rear of the house.
The home was unoccupied at the time and firefighters forced their way in, officials said. They were able to contain the fire to the deck and attic areas.
Officials said firefighters were hampered by several inoperable fire hydrants and low water pressure in the neighborhood. Tanker trucks from area fire departments responded to the scene to support the firefighters.
Despite the problems with water flow, the fire was under control within 30 minutes of the arrival of the first fire units, officials said.
The Stamford Fire Marshal’s Office is still investigating the cause and origin of the fire, Roach said.
