State Dems join Lamont in endorsing Simmons
STAMFORD — Connecticut Democrats are lining up behind Stamford mayoral candidate and state Rep. Caroline Simmons following her win over current Mayor David Martin in last week’s primary.
Gov. Ned Lamont endorsed Simmons in her bid for mayor on Monday. On Tuesday, Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz voiced support for Simmons at a news conference where
Attorney General William Tong, who had attended Simmons’ campaign gathering on the night of the primary, also spoke in her favor.
“I think it’s really important right now, at this moment, that we elect the right leader,” Bysiewicz said. “There’s no time for training wheels. Caroline has spent more than a decade in government.”
The Stamford mayoral election, and elections for other municipal offices, will take place Nov. 2.
Bysiewicz said state Treasurer Shawn Wooden and Comptroller Kevin Lembo were also endorsing Simmons.
Every Democratic member of Stamford’s delegation to Hartford is now in Simmons’ corner as well.
Simmons was previously endorsed by state Sen. Patricia Billie Miller, D-27, and state Rep. Dan Fox, D-148, according to her campaign. State Reps. Corey Paris, D-145, and Matt Blumenthal, D-147, declared support for Simmons on Tuesday.
State Rep. David Michel, D-146, told The Stamford Advocate he couldn’t make it to Tuesday’s news conference but that he is also a Simmons supporter.
At the news conference, which took place outside the Stamford Government Center, Martin reiterated that he is backing Simmons over unaffiliated candidate and former Major League Baseball manager Bobby Valentine.
