STAMFORD — A judge upheld a $150,000 bond placed on a Stamford man accused of “body slamming” an elderly man and seriously injuring him.

Ohireime Julian Osemobor, 31, has been in jail since June 6, when he was arrested on a charge of first-degree assault on an elderly person.

The arrest followed an incident on May 29 when a man later identified as Osemobor was shown on video “essentially body slamming” a 66-year-old man as he walked down East Main Street near Quintard Terrace, Assistant State’s Attorney Michelle Manning said Monday.

Police said at the time of the arrest that they believe Osemobor falsely believed the victim had accosted a woman in the moments leading up to the alleged assault.

On Monday, Osemobor’s attorney, Howard Ehring, asked Judge Gary White to reduce his client’s bond to either a promise to appear or $25,000. He said “finances are very difficult” for Osemobor at the moment, and he cannot afford the $150,000 bond placed on him.

“I’m not going to run, I’m not going to flee,” said an impassioned Osemobor during Monday’s hearing.

Despite Osemobor’s pleas, White said the 31year-old’s past actions led him to believe he could be a flight risk.

When police located Osemobor at a city hotel during an unrelated disturbance call on June 6, Osemobor allegedly provided officers with a fake name and date of birth, according to Manning.

Osemobor also has pending charges for failure to respond to an infraction.

“If you’re not willing to show up to pay a ticket, why should I believe you show up to face this more serious charge?” White said Monday.

There is also a chance that Osemobor could face an even more serious charge, Manning said, depending on the condition of the victim.

Both Ehring and Manning said they are still awaiting updates on the victim.

The last time the prosecutor’s office received an update on him a couple of months ago, he was still dealing with “incredibly serious” injuries, including a brain bleed.

Osemobor is next scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 15.
