Man charged in ‘very dangerous’ daytime shooting

- By Pat Tomlinson

STAMFORD — A 25-yearold Norwalk man was arrested over the weekend for a “very dangerous shooting” that happened at a busy location in downtown Stamford this fall, according to police.

Kenneth Jeffries, 25, was arrested Friday evening on charges of criminal attempt at first-degree assault, criminal possession of a firearm and first-degree reckless endangerment.

Capt. Richard Conklin said Jeffries fired five gunshots at two men walking in the parking lot at 920 Summer St. around 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 7.

“Jeffries showed a callous disregard for the community,” Conklin said. “That is a very, very busy intersection at the end of the summer. At that time, you have a line of people stretching down the street at Dairy Queen, people waiting at the bus stop and pedestrians in the area.”

Conklin said Jeffries stalked the two targets of the shooting to the busy corner, where he parked his car and let off multiple shots at the men after shouting something at them, Conklin said.

Luckily, Conklin said, no one was struck by the bullets.

Conklin said a squad of Stamford’s Major Crimes Unit, under the leadership of Sgt. Jennifer Lynch, pinpointed Jeffries as the suspect in the case after months of collecting video surveillance from the area, as well as interviewing witnesses who saw the shooting.

Police do not know what led to the shooting, Conklin said.

Jeffries was taken into custody by state troopers Friday evening after they pulled him over for allegedly speeding in Bethany.

Jeffries, who is also facing an additional count of violation of probation, is being held on $515,000 bond and is next scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 18.
