Comptroller position key to state’s future

- By Sean Scanlon State Rep. Sean Scanlon, a Democrat who represents the 98th District, is a candidate for state comptroller.

Every penny needs to be spent efficiently and effectively, because government needs to invest in important social services and programs, maintain our fiscal progress and make Connecticut more affordable.

Our state is at a fiscal inflection point. For years, we struggled through budget deficits, cuts to important services and tax increases that made it harder for working families to get by.

Today, things fortunately look quite different. Record savings and surpluses. Historic investments in schools, public safety, housing and more. Bond upgrades from Wall Street. And for the first time in a generation, we're working on cutting taxes — putting money back in the pockets of millions of residents.

Connecticut is truly turning a fiscal corner and our outlook is stronger than it's been in a generation. But the question now is, how do we keep moving forward?

That's why I'm running for state comptroller.

Like so many, Connecticut is where I was born and raised. It's where my family will always be. Because I believe in Connecticut — and because I have a vision for our future.

A future where it's easier for working families to get by.

A future where working people have good-paying jobs, a strong economy and lower taxes.

A future where we continue to make the right investments in our schools, our transportation systems and our communities, so we attract new businesses and grow our economy from the middle out.

A future where health care and child care are accessible and affordable to everyone who needs it.

And a future where we don't choose between doubling down on important social programs and tax relief. We can do both. So how do we get there? First, we urgently need to put money back in people's pockets — and I'm working to do just that. As a budget leader in the Legislature, we just passed a historic gas tax cut to support working people while prices at the pump are rising. As parent to a young child, I've advocated for the child tax credit locally and nationally, and right now, I'm working with partners like Gov. Lamont to cut your car and property taxes.

While solving the global inflation crisis may be out of our hands, making Connecticut more affordable isn't.

Next, we need health care reform. No American should have to choose between putting food on the table and having health coverage, and no family should have to choose between a doctor's visit and economic survival.

As a kid, I watched my mom struggle to afford health care. As a single mom and smallbusiness owner, she rarely had insurance.

As a legislator, I passed laws to lower drug prices and expand access to insurance and I'll do that same as comptroller, not just because it's the right policy but because health care reform is personal to me.

And of course, we need to grow jobs. We need to cultivate a business climate that gives businesses big and small confidence about the future. That means continuing to grow our savings, pay down debt, and modernize workforce training programs to align them with the jobs of today — and tomorrow.

Why does this all matter for the role of comptroller?

Because you're the budget watchdog who keeps track of the dollars and cents, while monitoring the fiscal health of the state.

Every penny needs to be spent efficiently and effectively, because government needs to invest in important social services and programs, maintain our fiscal progress and make Connecticut more affordable.

I'm running to show that we can do all three.

Here's the bottom line: we're in a unique moment. Political division is tearing apart families and communities. Historic income inequality is creating unparalleled wealth at the very top while everyday people struggle to get by. There's unspeakable tragedy in Ukraine, and a global pandemic that continues.

But most working people in Connecticut aren't asking for much. They want a good, honest job with a fair wage. They want to know that if they or a loved one gets sick, that they'll have the health care coverage they deserve. They want great schools for their kids, a secure retirement, modern transportation systems, thriving small businesses and vibrant communities.

They want to know that their leaders are fighting for them today — and building a stronger economy for their families tomorrow.

And that's exactly why I'm running to be Connecticut's next comptroller.
