Everne Barbara Spiegel passed away on May 23, 2022 in Los Angeles, CA. She was 87.

She was born on April 4, 1935, a daughter of the late Anne and Jacob Waskow. At age 20, she married the love of her life, James Irving Spiegel.

She was raised in Ft. Lauderdale, FL., but met Jim in Pittsburgh, PA, on a blind date. It was love at first sight. On their wedding rings, they engraved the words: “I was sure.”

Mrs. Spiegel’s children, grandchild­ren, and greatgrand­child will be forever inspired by her generosity of spirit, devotion, and talent; and will always hold dear her encouragem­ent to take risks and follow their passions.

Mrs. Spiegel, who had a love of art, music, design, and architectu­re, was a talented singer and accomplish­ed pianist. She was a member of the Sun Maids, a well-known traveling singing group in Florida, and of synagogue choirs.

When she moved to Stamford, CT, in the 1960s, she started working in real estate and later opened her own company that eventually sold to a national real estate corporatio­n. She was president of the Connecticu­t Board of Realtors and won several awards for her service to the community.

Mrs. Spiegel, who studied education at the University of Miami, was a lifelong learner, who in recent years, returned to classes. She was deeply involved in the many communitie­s where she lived, known for her philanthro­py to medical research, local hospitals, and Jewish causes. Her unusual name, Everne, was her father’s inspiratio­n; she was named after his mother, Eva, and the beautiful names of Evernia Street and adjacent Fern Street in West Palm Beach.

Mrs. Spiegel was a loving mother of Stuart Spiegel of Austin, TX, Kenneth Spiegel of Delray Beach, FL, Diane Sorcher of New Canaan, CT, and Karen Spiegel of Los Angeles, CA. Cherished grandmothe­r of Sara Sorcher (Arie Lipnick), Gary Sorcher (Mary Sorcher), Emily Gebru (Samuel Gebru), Danielle Sorcher, Jacob Spiegel, and Philip Spiegel of blessed memory. Proud great-grandmothe­r of Liyat Gebru. She is also survived by a brother, Melvin Waskow of Wilton, CT.

Funeral Services will be held Graveside on Friday, May 27, at 11 a.m. at Temple Beth El, 350 Roxbury Rd, Stamford, CT.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach or University of Chicago, Gwen Knapp Center for Lupus and Immunology Research.
