Police: Teen carried fake gun

MILFORD — A local teen was arrested after he was seen waving an airsoft replica gun at the beach Wednesday — one day after he seemingly went unnoticed carrying the same fake weapon around the property of his former high school, police said.

Milford police said the teen, identified only as a former Jonathan Law High School student, was arrested Wednesday afternoon when he was seen with the gun on the beach at Silver Sands State Park.

Police said the teen was seen on video surveillance carrying the same weapon, which was described as a “gel blaster gun that shoots gel pellets,” the previous day outside his former high school, but the incident wasn’t reported until Wednesday.

Because he is a juvenile, police did not release the boy’s name or age. He was issued a juvenile summons for second-degree breach of peace and carrying a dangerous weapon for the incident at the beach. Police said he was also charged with possessing weapons on school property for the incident the previous day at the high school.

Police said they were first notified about the boy around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday when a witness reported seeing him walking on Harrison Avenue “carrying a tommy gun with a round magazine.”

However, police said they didn’t find anyone when they arrived in the area. Police said neighborhood cameras also did not show anything suspicious.

The Jonathan Law school resource officer was notified around 12:50 p.m. Wednesday about a suspicious incident that occurred the previous day. That incident involved “a juvenile on school property that was carrying what looked like a paintball or airsoft gun,” police said.

It was not clear who reported the incident or why it was not reported sooner.

Police said the school resource officer reviewed surveillance footage that captured the teen “known to the officer as a former student” walking with what appeared to be an airsoft gun. The video captured the former student walking around the school property by the baseball fields and behind the building around 3 p.m. Tuesday, police said. Police did not say whether the student was seen inside the building.
