The New Canaan and Darien girls lacrosse teams, who played in a thrilling Class L final on Saturday, both finished the 2022 season ranked in the top five nationally.

New Canaan (21-1), which won that state final 14-13, finished as the No. 4 team, with Darien (20-2) at No. 5 in the final Nike/USA Lacrosse High School Girls National Top 25.

St. Paul (Md.), Victor (N.Y.) and Glenelg Country (Md.) were the top three.

For New Canaan, the season was historic as the Rams won both FCIAC and state championships for the first time. The Rams hadn’t won an FCIAC title in 28 years before winning last spring, and made it two straight with a 10-8 win over Darien this season.

New Canaan’s state championship was its first since 2018.

Darien had won two straight state championships in 2019 and 2021 before finishing runner-up this season. The Blue Wave have the most state titles in Connecticut girls lacrosse history with 11.

The Nike/USA Lacrosse Northeast Top 10 featured No. 1 Victor (N.Y.), which was 21-1, No. 2 New Canaan and No. 3 Darien.

The only losses among those three teams came against each other.

Victory played the two Connecticut teams during a three-game span in April suffering its only loss of the season in a 10-9 game against Darien before defeating New Canaan 8-7.

The Rams’ only other loss was to Darien 15-11 during a regular-season meeting on April 19.

The Blue Wave were the only Connecticut team to get through the regular season undefeated, but then lost twice to New Canaan in the postseason.
