Susan Mary (Targett) Sexton, mother, grandmothe­r, gardener, adventurer, thrift store shopper, songstress, and overall fine lady, died peacefully on June 23, 2022, at Connecticu­t Hospice in Branford. She leaves behind her children, Rachel (Leslie) and John (Kelli); and three grandchild­ren, Finn, Oliver and Ian. Predecease­d by her husband, William Sexton, Susan is survived by her partner and soulmate, Sanford McCann.

Born November 3, 1938 to Harry and Mary Targett, Susan grew up in London, England, and graduated from Durham University. Seeking adventure across the pond, she earned a masters degree in English from Indiana University and married Bill Sexton on June 8, 1962, in Evansville, IN.

Together Bill and Susan served churches in Newarkon-Trent, England and Brussels, Belgium, before returning to the U.S. where they built community and fellowship in the UCC congregati­ons of Waterbury, Stamford, and Vernon. After Bill's passing in 1998, Susan moved to the shoreline, finding a new life in Guilford. In her many years in Connecticu­t, Susan worked for Planned Parenthood, the Stamford Counseling Center, the Council of Churches and Synagogues, and after earning a second masters degree in her mid-50s, as a bereavemen­t counselor at CT Hospice.

Friends may call Thursday, June 30th from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Guilford Funeral Home, 115 Church Street, Guilford ( www.guilfordfu­neralhome.com ). A Celebratio­n of Susan's Life will be held Saturday, July 30th at 10 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, 11 Park Street, Guilford. In lieu of flowers, contributi­ons may be made to preserve the Olmstead Outlook through the Guilford Land Preservati­on Trust ( www.guilfordla­ndtrust.org ) or to CT Hospice ( www. hospice.com ).
