Stamford man accused of filming in public restroom

Alleged repeat offender, police say; faces a voyeurism with malice charge

GREENWICH — A woman went to the restroom at Tod’s Point on the afternoon of Jan. 30 to use the facilities and had her privacy violated by a man with a cell phone, according to Greenwich Police.

After she went into a stall at the public restroom, she observed “an arm extending over the top of the stall holding a cellular phone or similar device,” according to the arrest warrant application filed in Superior Court in Stamford.

The man who allegedly pointed the camera in the bathroom, Simeon Samual Idem, 31, of Glenbrook Road, Stamford, is now facing a felony charge of voyeurism with malice and breach of peace, a misdemeanor. Idem turned himself in to police headquarters Tuesday to face the charges; he was released after posting a surety bond on $50,000 bail.

According to the court filing, the woman noticed a man wearing a black Nike jacket near the bathroom, “looking suspicious and out of place.”

She told police she saw the same clothing, as well as a glimpse of the man’s appearance, after she saw the camera pointed in the stall. She yelled and he ran off, the affidavit stated.

Her husband, who was outside, chased the man until he entered a Chevrolet Trax with Pennsylvania plates and drove off, according to the warrant application. Authorities tracked the vehicle to Idem, police said. A local resident who followed the car also reported to police that the car headed into Stamford, police said.

Greenwich police searched the criminal database and found Idem had been arrested twice in Chambersburg, Pa., near Gettysburg in southern Pennsylvania, on charges of invasion of privacy and disorderly conduct. Idem previously lived in that Pennsylvania town, police said. In one incident in November of 2019, according to the court filing that cited police in Chambersburg, “the subject was caught putting a recording device underneath a female bathroom stall.” He was also arrested in October 2019 in a similar incident at a public library, according to records.

The disposition of those cases was not immediately available.

Idem is due back in court Feb. 16 for arraignment.
