Home that belonged to Stamford Hospital founder in 1800s listed for $1.7 million

STAMFORD — On Westover Road, sits a quaint, yellow home that is rooted deep in Stamford’s history. The property’s nickname, Bantam Farm, has served as an heirloom for families dating back to the mid 1700s.

The farm was maintained by the June and Smith family, before being sold off to the Clason family in the 1880s. The house belonged to farmer John Clason, who also served as a judge for the probate court in Stamford, according to the information provided by listing agent, Tom Vozzella.

Judge Clason had a prominent part in opening the Stamford Hospital in May 1896. He donated an initial $47,000 for the hospital, which is nearly $1.7 million today. He gave another $10,000 for fundraising efforts for the hospital. The patients wanted the hospital to be named after him, but he insisted it was named Stamford Hospital, which is still active today.

Today, the home on 1263 Westover Road has an expansive property of 2.52 acres with a main home and cottage with a separate driveway. The main home on the right side of the property has four bedrooms and three bathrooms. The home has had slight renovations to the original features, including the main home’s three fireplaces.

“The feel of the home is charming, yet of the moment,” Vozzella said.

Much of the charm comes from the wood and stone in the interior. All materials in which were sourced from the property, Vozzella added.

At the bottom of the stairs, a painting of a seaside scene was created by the owner who is an artist. Another of her paintings if on the way up to the second level and is of Bantam Farm as a unique ode to the property.

On the left side of the property is the legal rental cottage with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. The cottage has its own one-acre yard that has potential to be divided, according to the property details. There is also an art studio with a kitchenette and its own bedroom and bathroom.

Bantam Farm is located in the Westover section of Stamford, and sits in the area’s highest points. The home is located right by the Merritt Parkway and just a 10-minute drive to Clason’s Stamford Hospital.
