In this charming flick based on Rebecca Dinerstein’s moving novel of the same name, millennial artist Frances (Slate), frustrated in her work and fresh off a breakup, retreats to the safety of her parents’ Manhattan home. However, instead of comfort, she gets a double slap in the face: Not only is her sister engaged, but her parents have also decided to separate. Desperate to escape the confines of NYC, Frances takes a gig in Norway’s Far North, assisting a renowned painter, the curmudgeonly Nils (Fridtjov Såheim), who gives her the Mr. Miyagi-like task of painting his barn. His remote village comes with an eccentric band of inhabitants, including Viking reenactor Chief (Galifianakis) and fellow New Yorker Yasha (Sharp), who’s determined to give his late father a Viking funeral. Frances’ new acquaintances evolve from strangers into members of a much-needed support system. And as her dormant ambitions begin to run wild, she’s inspired to begin a new chapter in her life.
