Anne’s PREGNANCY HEARTBREAK

IN A TOUCHING NEW INTERVIEW, ANNE HATHAWAY SHARES HER DIFFICULT JOURNEY TO MOTHERHOOD.

ANNE HATHAWAY was hiding a heartbreaking secret while performing as a pregnant Air Force pilot in the 2015 play Grounded. In the April issue of Vanity Fair, the 41-year-old revealed that she miscarried during the show’s six-week run. “I was doing a play and I had to give birth onstage every night,” she told the mag, adding that she was consoled by friends when they visited her backstage. “It was too much to keep it in when I was onstage pretending everything was fine. I had to keep it real.”

The Oscar winner, currently starring in The Idea of You, has been open about her fertility struggles in the past. In a 2019 Instagram post announcing she was pregnant with her second child with husband Adam Shulman, she wrote, “For everyone going through infertility and conception hell, please know it was not a straight line to either of my pregnancies.”

The message was important to the Interstellar star. “Given the pain I felt while trying to get pregnant it would’ve felt disingenuous to post something all the way happy,” she told the mag, adding, “I wasn’t going to feel ashamed of something that seemed to me statistically to actually be quite normal.”

Indeed, she was stunned to learn how common miscarriages are — and wants women to know they’re not alone. “I thought, Where is this information? Why are we feeling so unnecessarily isolated? That’s where we take on damage,” she told VF. “So I decided that I was going to talk about it... It’s really hard to want something so much and to wonder if you’re doing something wrong.” ★
