Record catfish caught at Lake Mary Crawford
LAWRENCE COUNTY – A new record catfish has been caught at Lake Mary Crawford.
Mr. Richard Albritton of Bogue Chitto, caught the 14.4 pound channel catfish on March 19, 2017.
Lake Mary Crawford is a 128-acre state fishing lake located near Monticello.
“Each lake maintains a list of record fish, and we encourage anglers to let us know if they believe their catch might be a new record,” said Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks State Lake coordinator Jerry Brown.
Fish that qualify for a state lake record include largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish, crappie, and catfish. Potential record fish must be verified by a member of the Fisheries Bureau staff.
Anglers who catch a state lake record fish will receive a certificate from MDWFP, and a copy will be displayed at the lake’s office. The record will also be acknowledged on MDWFP’s website.

Great year fishing expected for Northeast Mississippi
JACKSON – Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks Fisheries Biologists expect another great year for anglers during the upcoming fishing season in Northeast Mississippi. “Tippah County Lake and Tombigbee State Park Lake continue to get better,” said Trevor Knight, MDWFP Fisheries Biologist. “The overall health and size structure for bass and bream are improving. We continue to encourage anglers to harvest bass less than 14 inches in length.”
Anglers searching for big flathead catfish should head to Tippah County Lake. Concurrently, the blue catfish population is increasing at Elvis Presley Lake near Tupelo.
Lake Lamar Bruce is the most popular State Fishing Lake in the northeast for boat and bank anglers. The fishing pond at Lamar Bruce is perfect for bank anglers and harbors good numbers of catfish and some big bass. Anglers continue to catch large walleye on crankbaits and jerkbaits. Walleye up to 7 pounds were reportedly caught this past winter.
The Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway will provide great fishing experiences throughout 2017. The “river lakes,” Aliceville, Columbus, and Aberdeen, as well as the Canal Lakes A through E boast abundant populations of bass and crappie. Fall sampling at Columbus Lake indicated significant improvements in the overall health of bass and crappie.
“The old gravel pits on the lower end of the lake, as well as old river runs in the mid-lake section, are prime areas to fish,” Knight said.
As always, Pickwick and Bay Springs Lakes are prime destinations for bass anglers in the southeast, as aquatic vegetation becomes more abundant. Umbrella rigs are still the hottest technique on Pickwick for catching largemouth and smallmouth bass. If you want a chance at a trophy spotted bass, Bay Springs is the best place in Mississippi to catch one.
