Chappell wins PGA’s Texas Open

-

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Kevin Chappell made an 8-foot putt on the final hole to win the Valero Texas Open by one stroke on Sunday for his first PGA Tour victory in his 180th career start.

Chappell closed with a 4-under 68 at the TPC San Antonio to finish at 12-under 276 for the tournament, one shot better than Brooks Koepka.

Koepka, a member of the U.S. Ryder Cup team last year, was looking for his second PGA Tour victory. He hit a wedge to 3 feet for birdie on the 18th hole for a Sunday best 65 that momentarily tied him for the lead. Chappell, playing in the last group, also laid up on the par 5 and hit a tough wedge to a back spin that spun back 8 feet above the hole.

Tony Finau got in a position to tie Koepka when he birdied four of five holes on the back nine. But he drove into a cactus on the par-5 18th and had to take a penalty drop. A closing bogey gave him a 69 and a tie for third with Kevin Tway (69) at 9 under.
