Reds shut out Giants 4-0

-

CINCINNATI — Scott Feldman used every bit of his diplomatic and lobbying skills to earn a chance for those last three outs.

The right-hander talked his way into pitching one more inning despite a high pitch count. He made quick work of the San Francisco Giants in the ninth, finishing off a four-hitter for a 4-0 victory on Sunday that gave the Cincinnati Reds a series sweep.

Feldman (2-3) retired the side in order in the ninth for his third career shutout and his first since 2014 with Houston. It was Cincinnati’s first complete game of the season.

The Giants have seen a lot of that already. They were shut out for the fourth time, tied with the White Sox for most in the majors. They were outscored 31-5 while getting swept in a three-game series against Cincinnati for the first time since 2013.

Phillies 6, Nationals, 5, 10 innings

PHILADELPHIA — Freddy Galvis elevated the ball at just the right time.

Galvis hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the Philadelphia Phillies to a comeback win over the Washington Nationals.

Pinch-hitter Aaron Altherr connected for a tying, three-run homer in the eighth and the Phillies rallied to avoid a threegame sweep.

Odubel Herrera led off the bottom of the 10th with a checked-swing double down the left-field line off Blake Treinen (0-1). After Altherr was intentionally walked, pitcher Vince Velasquez batted for reliever Hector Neris and reached on a bunt single. Treinen fanned Andres Blanco, but Galvis drove in the winning run with a liner to center.

Galvis finished with two hits and three RBIs.

Marlins 7, Mets 0

NEW YORK — Giancarlo Stanton was surprised to see someone besides Matt Harvey on the mound for the New York Mets. Not that the Miami slugger let a last-minute pitching change affect his success at Citi Field.

Shortly after Harvey was suspended by the Mets and scratched from his start, Stanton hit a pair of monstrous home runs off fill-in Adam Wilk to lead the Marlins to a victory.

Harvey was penalized three days without pay for an undisclosed violation of team rules. The Marlins learned of the move at 11:45 a.m. and had little to no time to prepare for the replacement.

Wilk (0-1) was brought up from Triple-A Las Vegas on short notice and little sleep. He made several stops on his way to New York and took an overnight flight, arriving at the ballpark straight from the airport around 8:45 a.m.

It was his first appearance in the majors since pitching one game for the Angels in 2015 — before that, his previous time in the big leagues was 2012 with Detroit.

The 29-year-old lefty was no match for the prodigious power of Stanton, whose 20 home runs at Citi Field are the most at any visiting ballpark by a player since 2011. Wilk allowed six runs and eight hits in 3 2/3 innings.

Brewers 6, Pirates 2

PITTSBURGH — Eric Thames was unable to get warm in his hotel room on a cold Saturday night. The next day, his bat heated up on a sunny afternoon.

Thames broke out of his slump with a home run and three hits, sending the Milwaukee Brewers to a victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Travis Shaw and Jesus Aguilar also went deep for Milwaukee. Thames connected for a solo shot in the ninth inning off Johnny Barbato, his first homer in 10 games after hitting 11 in his first 20 games.

Rockies 5, Diamondbacks 2

DENVER — Tyler Chatwood was off his game — and that was a good thing.

Usually one to throw harder and harder in times of trouble, Chatwood reversed that trend and leaned more on his off-speed pitches.

Throwing slower made him even more steady. Chatwood pitched two-hit ball into the eighth inning before exiting after deflecting a comebacker with his pitching hand, Mark Reynolds homered for a third straight game and the Colorado Rockies beat the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Pat Valaika lined a two-run homer and Charlie Blackmon added a solo shot into the second deck as the NL West-leading Rockies took two out of three from the Diamondbacks.
