MSU announces first Fulbright Summer Institute participant
For the first time, a Misssissippi State University student will participate in the Fullbright Summer Institute.
Junior mechanical engineering major and Starkville native Jacob Easley is one of 10 American undergraduate students selected to participate in the program. He will travel to Scotland to participate in the institute at the University of Strathclyde and the Glasgow School of Art.
Much of the curriculum will focus on cultural and political forces that have shaped Scotland, with an emphasis on its role as a technological nation.
Outside of the classroom, the program will take place in several locations across Glasgow, Edinburgh and the Scottish Highlands.
“I hope that experiencing the research and innovation being done in Scotland will allow me to see its relation to the research and innovation being done at Mississippi State University and, moreover, see the underlying forces that make Mississippi State such a successful research institution,” Easley said.
The U.S.-U.K. Fulbright Commission selects students for the program based on a
rigorous application and interview process as well as a focused application, academic excellence, extracurricular and community involvement, a desire to further the Fulbright
Programme and a plan to give back to the recipient’s home country upon return.
Office of Prestigious Internal Scholarships Director Tommy Anderson and MSU Fulbright Program Director David Hoffman mentored Easley through his application.
“In the 70th year of the Special Relationship, we can celebrate American students seeking study abroad opportunities through our Summer Institute programme,” said US-UK Fulbright Commission Executive Director Penny
Egan. “This is a unique opportunity to get a taste of British higher education while interacting with students from across the globe. As part of a diverse and highachieving cohort, these students will gain immensely from the experience.”
