Miami edges Georgia Tech in 13 innings
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Joe Gomez's runscoring single in the bottom of the 13th inning lifted Miami past Georgia Tech 6-5 on Tuesday in the opening game of the Atlantic Coast Conference baseball tournament.
Hunter Tackett hit a grand slam in the third and Michael Burns had a solo homer in the first for the sixth-seeded Hurricanes (3026). They will play third-seeded Wake Forest on Thursday with the winner advancing to the semifinal round.
Edgar Michelangeli started the rally by drawing a one-out walk in the 13th, then advanced to third on Christopher Barr's single up the middle. Gomez ended it with his single through the right side off Zac Ryan (3-5).
Andrew Cabezas (5-3) struck out 10 in 6 1-3 innings of relief for Miami. Brandt Stallings had a two-run double in the second for 10th-seeded Georgia Tech (27-27).
NC State 6, Boston College 1
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Brett Kinneman's three-run homer in the seventh inning broke the game open as North Carolina State topped Boston College in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament.
SEC Auburn 5, Mississippi 4
HOOVER, Ala. — Blake Logan homered and Casey Mize pitched six strong innings of relief to lift Auburn over Mississippi in the Southeastern Conference tournament.
The Tigers (35-22) face top-seeded Florida today, when the tournament switches to double elimination. The Rebels (32-25) were eliminated.
Logan's solo shot in the bottom of the sixth gave Auburn the lead and the Tigers scored again in the eighth on a wild pitch.
Ryan Olenek answered for Ole Miss with a one-out homer in the top of the ninth. Then Mize (7-2) ended the game on a grounder to the mound and his ninth strikeout.
He allowed two runs, one earned, and didn't issue a walk.
Missouri 12, Texas A&M 7
HOOVER, Ala. — Robbie Glendinning hit a grand slam and Andy Toelken pitched 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief Tuesday as Missouri eliminated Texas A&M.
Tenth-seeded Missouri (36-21) earned its seventh straight victory and advanced to the double-elimination portion of the tournament. Missouri faces No. 2 seed LSU (39-17) today.
Texas A&M, seeded seventh, led 6-4 before Glendinning's fourth-inning grand slam off Kaylor Chafin put Missouri ahead for good. Glendinning finished with five RBIs.
Missouri's Matt Berler and Chris Cornelius also homered.
South Carolina 7, Vanderbilt 4, 11 innings
HOOVER, Ala. — Riley Hogan drew a bases loaded walk and Alex Destino added a two-run double with two outs in the 11th inning to lift South Carolina to a victory over Vanderbilt Tuesday in the opening game of the Southeastern Conference tournament.
