ICC player, MSU commit Reed drafted by Rangers
FULTON – Itawamba Community College sophomore Tyre que Reed was selected in the eighth round of the 2017 MLB Draft as the 254th overall pick of
by the Texas Rangers on Tuesday.
Reed was a unanimous selection for the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges All State first team and National Junior
College Athletic Association Region 23 selection after leading the country with a .504 batting average and only striking out 11 times in 141 at-bats. The 6-foot-1, 260-pound first baseman and right fielder had 71 hits with 15 home runs, 15 doubles, and 1 triple. Reed had 57 RBI to go along with 53 runs, six stolen bases and 46 walks. He was chosen MAC JC Player of the Week twice this past season.
The Houlka native finished his sophomore season ranked in the Top 9 in five offensive categories in country, including a nation’s best on-base percentage (.638), slugging percentage (.943), batting average, walks and home runs.
Reed had a .416 career batting average with a .535 on-base and .814 slugging percentage in two seasons with the Indians.
He is the second highest pick and the 19th studentathlete to be drafted in the storied history of the ICC baseball program.
Reed committed to the Mississippi State baseball program in May.
