Fan injured when bat flies into CWS stands

OMAHA, Neb. — A 61-year-old man sitting behind the Louisville dugout at the College World Series sustained a minor cut to his head when he was struck by a bat that flew out of a player's hands Sunday.

Burke Perry of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, was in the second row when Louisville's Josh Stowers lost grip of his bat as he swung at a pitch against Texas A&M to end the third inning. Perry said he saw the bat coming but couldn't get out of the way.

Nearby fans applied towels to Perry's head. Medics escorted him to a first-aid station, and he returned to his seat with his son a few minutes later.

Perry had about a 2-inch cut on the top of his head. He said the bat "just skimmed me."

Cardinal coach recalls other Father's Day win

Louisville baseball coach Dan McDonnell reminisced about his father attending the only other game the Cardinals have won at a College World Series.

It happened 10 years ago, a 12-4 victory over Mississippi State on Father's Day.

"Even though he wasn't in the best shape, he was here, and I got great memories of that," McDonnell said. "So today in my back pocket I kept the funeral card from my dad. It's an Irish blessing. My dad was a good Irishman and he loved life. I put that in my back pocket thinking my dad would love this today. So Father's Day has been good to the Cardinals."

Big inning routine

Louisville's five runs in the second inning marked the 26th time this season it has scored four or more in an inning this season.
