New storage facility under construction
A six-acre storage facility is being built on the western side of Starkville on Eudora Welty Drive.
Founder and president of Absolute Storage Management Michael Haugh said construction officially began on Starkville Self Storage two weeks ago. The company hopes for the facility to be finished in January 2018 and open shortly after.
The new facility will have 65,000 square feet of self storage and 9,000 square feet of RV storage.
Haugh said 60 percent of the self-storage units will be climate-controlled and 40 percent will be traditional drive-up access units.
The facility's RV storage will be fully enclosed, covered parking that will protect RVs and boats from sunlight while they are not in use.
Haugh said Mississippi State University's presence and the growing population of Starkville is what drew Absolute Storage Management to the college town.
"It is a community we feel is moving in the right direction," Haugh said. "The school is a good anchor in the city and we think that there is commitment from the state to make improvements overall in Starkville."
Haugh gave infrastructure improvements taking place in Starkville, such as the repaving of Highway 25 and work on Highway 12 as examples of recent improvements.
Haugh said there is a 3/4 acre space that will not initially have any storage units. The extra space is for Starkville Self Storage to expand its more popular rental unit types once it is open.
