Starkville All-Star teams play at home
There will be plenty of competition at the 8-year-old Dizzy Dean Tournament in Louisville this week.
As far as the Starkville National All-Stars are concerned, they hope enough victories come to make a run at a title.
"We feel like we'll be competitive," Starkville National coach George Lewis said. "I don't know how many we'll win, but I think we'll be in every ballgame we play.
"The other Starkville team (American) I would say is probably the favorite to win it. Our goal is to win as many games as we can and hopefully at least be in the conversation."
Starkville National will take on host Louisville today at 3 p.m., while Starkville American plays West Point at 4:30 p.m. Other area teams Mathiston and Choctaw County are competing in the tournament.
Lewis said his team didn't do as well as it would have liked at a warm-up tournament last week, but he is read to hit the reset button and try again.
"We're pretty happy with where we are right now," Lewis said. "We had a couple of our keys players out (for the warm-up tournament), so we feel pretty good about things."
The members of the Starkville National 8-yearold All-Stars are Will Akers, Walt Anthony, Quintin Baker, Tanner Chance, Alex Edelblute, Nate Fratesi, Will Hosford, Tucker Lewis, Sam Robinson, Elliott Tucker, Brody Wright and Jace Yates. Kevin Edelblute, Jeff Hosford and Jesse Yates are the assistant coaches helping Lewis.
Lewis likes the way his squad play defense, but would like to get more consistency with the offense.
"If we can get hot with the bats, that gives us a pretty good chance to win some ballgames," Lewis said.
