Weather was the winner at McKee Park on Friday afternoon.

After a powerful thunderstorm dumped a tremendous amount of rain in the Starkville area, Dizzy Dean officials determined that the field conditions would not allow there to be any games played in the 6-year-old and 12-year-old South State Tournaments.

Dizzy Dean South State Tournament Director Randy Carlisle said the tournament bracket has been adjusted and action is now scheduled to resume today for the 12’s at 10 a.m. and the 6’s at noon.

The Starkville 6-year-olds had earned a day off anyway after winning a pair of games on Thursday, but now their game with Greenwood in the winner’s bracket has been pushed back to 3 p.m. today.

Getting an unexpected day off were the Starkville 12-year-olds of coach Russ McReynolds. They will now take on Newton County at noon today.

“The guys had a day off to relax and take it easy,” McReynolds said. “We get back going (today).”

The Starkville 12’s had no problem winning their first-round game by handling Louisville 20-3.

Even though not playing on Friday gives his pitching staff an extra day of rest, he would have rathered stayed in a rhythm while the bats were hot.

“As far as pitching is concerned, we’ll be in excellent shape,” McReynolds said. “We wanted to play ball (Friday). We wanted to keep rolling and keep playing. We had momentum from (Thursday’s) win, but weather happens and the fields were not ready for us to play on them so we are having to hold off.”
