Fundraiser to benefit animal rescue organizations
Grassroots Animal Rescue of Mississippi and the Oktibbeha County Humane Society will benefit from a week-long Stuff the Bucket fundraiser and a Spirit Night being hosted by Chick-fil-A of Starkville.
From Monday through Friday, Chick-fil-A Starkville on Highway 12 will celebrate its fifth anniversary by giving back to the community through raising money for local charities. Two 5-gallon pickle buckets will be near the restaurant's counter for customers to give donations to the local charities.
On Thursday, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., the restaurant will host a special Spirit Night event. During Spirit Night, 15 percent of the check will be donated from customers who mention the event at checkout.
Grassroots Animal Rescue of Mississippi is going into its sixth year of fostering and adopting out dogs in Starkville.
Director Jessica Thompson said events like these play an important role for charities like Grassroots because it raises both funds and awareness.
"Because Grassroots is a foster-based rescue without a shelter, we don't get tax dollars," Thompson said. "Almost all of our money comes from donations and community support."
Grassroots Animal Rescue uses donations to provide food and veterinary care for its animals. Each dog that is adopted through the organization is spayed or neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, dewormed and treated for fleas and heart worms.
Grassroots currently has 30 dogs in its foster home network. Thompson said she and other representatives from Grassroots Animal Rescue and from OCHS will be at the restaurant on Spirit Night to meet with people from the community.
"We hope that everybody comes out," Thompson said. "For anyone interested in adopting or seeing how they could help, events like this are a good time for them to come out and ask questions."
