One of Dan Mullen's first hires when he became the head football coach at Mississippi State is leaving the program.

Scott Sallach, who spent eight seasons with the Bulldogs as tight ends coach, has decided to move on.

“Scott is pursuing other opportunities and we wish him well,” Mullen said in a statement.

Sallach and

Mullen got to know each other when they were teammates at

Ursinus College.

After Sallach left Ursinus, he began his coaching career at Hamilton College, where he worked with the wide receivers for one season in 1994.

He continued that role at Monmouth for three seasons from 1995-97, then coached wide receivers and special teams at Dartmouth from 1998-2002.

Sallach's next stop was a successful one.

During a six-year tenure as the wide receiver-quarterback coach at Princeton, Sallach participated in five NCAA bowl games. He also added the title of passing game coordinator at the Ivy League school prior to the 2008 season and some good numbers emerge with two of the top four career passing yardage totals and two of the best five season passing yardage efforts. He coached two of the top seven all-time receivers at Princeton, and in his six seasons coached nine all-league performers and one became an AllAmerican. Mullen was able to hire Sallach away from Princeton in 2009 and he started teaching the tight ends in MSU's spread offense.

Two of the Bulldogs that thrived from Sallach's time in Starkville were Malcolm Johnson and Marcus Green.

Johnson was a sixth round pick of the Cleveland Browns in the 2015 National Football League Draft.
