PITTSBURGH — The Pirates closed their series against the rival St. Louis Cardinals the same way they began it: with a walkoff win. This time it came from a former Mississippi State Bulldog. Adam Frazier's game-ending single capped a two-run rally in the ninth inning that lifted Pittsburgh to a 4-3 victory Sunday.

Francisco Cervelli reached on an infield single leading off the ninth against Brett Cecil (1-3), and Jordy Mercer's one-out double scored pinch-runner Josh Harrison with the tying run. Jose Osuna grounded out, David Freese was intentionally walked and Frazier lined a single to center.

Frazier's hit was the first walkoff hit of his career and it came just two days after Josh Bell got his first with a three-run homer in the ninth off Seung Hwan Oh.

"We hung around," manager Clint Hurdle said. "We gave up two leads, battled back and had a nice, strong ninth inning with some good at-bats. I'm proud of the men and I'm proud of the fight."

Wade LeBlanc (4-2) pitched a hitless ninth. Pirates starter Trevor Williams gave up two runs and 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Yadier Molina had put St. Louis ahead 3-2 with an eighth inning home run, the first allowed by Juan Nicasio this year.

"I think it's been like that all year," Frazier said. "We went through some adversity. It's just fighting until the last out."

Pirates starter Trevor Williams gave up two runs and 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings. He singled in the third for his first major league hit after an 0-for-21 start at the plate.

Cardinals starter Carlos Martinez (7-8) allowed two runs and five hits in seven innings, and had an RBI single in the sixth.

Andrew McCutchen's run-scoring single put Pittsburgh ahead in the fifth, and Matt Carpenter's RBI double tied the score in the fifth.

Max Moroff hit his first big league home run for the Pirates, a line drive off the right-field foul pole in the fifth. Moroff had 18 homer runs this season with Triple-A Indianapolis but was 4 for 48 in the majors. "I hit the ball on the barrel for the first time in a while," he said. Williams had started his MLB career 0 for 21 before his single to right in the third.

HOUSTON — On a day when Houston's powerful hitters were lagging, the Astros found a way to generate runs in another way.

Mike Fiers struck out a season-high 11 over seven strong innings and Nori Aoki had two hits and two RBIs to help the Astros beat the Minnesota Twins 5-3 on Sunday.

The AL West leaders took two of three from the Twins coming out of the All-Star break.

Houston trailed in the fourth before Yuli Gurriel doubled, Marwin Gonzalez walked and Aoki hit a two-run double for a 3-2 lead.

The Astros added a couple of insurance runs in the seventh thanks to alert baserunning. Jake Marisnick walked, stole second base and scored on an error by first baseman Kennys Vargas. Jose Altuve doubled, stole third and dashed home when Josh Reddick was thrown out at first on a third strike that got away.

Fiers (6-4) allowed two runs on four hits and no walks. He had walked eight combined in his last two starts.

Ken Giles gave up a run in the ninth for his 20th save.

Vargas and Ehire Adrianza hit solo homers for Minnesota. Kyle Gibson (5-8) yielded four runs in six-plus innings.

Vargas gave the Twins a 1-0 lead with his shot to right-center in the second. The Astros tied it in the bottom half on singles by Alex Bregman, Aoki and Marisnick.

Adrianza put the Twins back on top when he hit his first homer of the season in the third.

Robbie Grossman singled with two outs in the third before Fiers retired six in a row. Adrianza singled with two outs in the fifth, but he was picked off at first to end the inning and Fiers didn't allow another baserunner before he was replaced by Chris Devenski to start the eighth.

BOSTON — CC Sabathia (8-3) allowed two hits over six innings, and Didi Gregorius hit a solo home run around the Pesky Pole in the opener of a day-night doubleheader.

Boston stranded 10 runners and went 0 for 11 with runners in scoring position, leaving the Red Sox 2 for 31 RISP in series and 2 for 51 against the Yankees this season.

Rick Porcello (4-12) gave up three runs — one earned — and nine hits in six innings.

New York took a 2-0 lead in the fourth when Ji-Man Choi hit a sacrifice fly and Ronald Torreyes had an RBI single after shortstop Xander Bogaerts allowed Clint Frazier's grounder to bounce off his glove and chest for an error.

Tigers 6, Blue Jays 5

DETROIT — Miguel Cabrera walked with the bases loaded in the 11th inning Sunday, giving the Detroit Tigers a 6-5 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.

With the score 5-all, Alex Avila was walked by Jeff Beliveau (1-1) leading off the 11th, Nicholas Castellanos reached on an error by third baseman Josh Donaldron and Lucas Harrell walked Justin Upton and Cabrera.

Mariners 7, White Sox 6

CHICAGO — Nelson Cruz homered on a 3-0 pitch from Chris Beck (1-1) leading off the 10th inning, his 19th home run this season, as Seattle overcame a 5-0 deficit and won its fourth straight. Chicago has lost four in a row.

Royals 4, Rangers 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Texas right fielder Shin-Soo Choo lost Lorenzo Cain's routine fly in the sun, and the ball glanced off his glove for a tiebreaking RBI single with two outs in the ninth as Kansas City stooped a five-game losing streak overall and a 12-game skid against Texas.

Angels 4, Rays 3

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Pinch-hitter C.J. Cron connected for a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the eighth off Adam Kolarek after Andrelton Simmons singled against Jumbo Diaz (1-4).

Athletics 7, Indians 3

OAKLAND, Calif. — Cleveland starter Trevor Bauer got just two outs in a fourrun first inning and matched the shortest start of his big league career as the Oakland completed a surprising three-game sweep of AL Central-leading Cleveland, which has lost four straight for the first time since 2015.
